Let's Talk Agro!

Hi guys, there is this forum coming up and I figured it will be a great opportunity to relay information on pertinent issues relating to agribusiness. In the coming weeks, I will be uploading posts on topics relating to agribusiness, agri-tourism, value-chains, youth entrepreneurship amongst several others as they relate to the forum. Oh yeah, the program? Caribbean and Pacific Agri-Food Forum 2015 (CPAF15).

Now I am almost certain some of my Nigerian buddies might be wondering what link exists between agriculture in the Caribbean/Pacific and Africa. I daresay that the global food system today is plagued with monumental challenges and risks: production and prices have become more unpredictable whilst poverty and hunger levels remain alarmingly high.

Looking inwards, there is an ever increasing need to seek alternative sources of revenue generation. These factors coupled with several others have thus made it important for Nigeria and Africa to collaborate on provided global platforms in a bid to embrace the new post-2015 agenda.

The New Vision for Agriculture, defined by World Economic Forum partners in 2009, holds that to meet the world's needs sustainably, agriculture must simultaneously deliver food security, environmental sustainability and economic opportunity. The vision sets a goal of 20% improvement in each area per decade until 2050. Achieving these goals require a transformation of agricultural sectors, leveraging market-based approaches through a coordinated effort by ALL stakeholders, including farmers, government, civil societies and private sectors.

Whilst there is not one answer to the numerous agricultural challenges we face, we need lots of varying suggestions as to possible solutions.

Have you heard about CPAF15?
